Landscape Renovation

The Philadelphia area has a special bucolic splendor. William Penn's founding vision was for a "Greene Countrie Towne". We strive to help fulfill his idyllic vision.

The large trees in our area provide many benefits beyond the visual and are an important part of what makes our neighborhoods beautiful and comfortable places to live.

Our process begins by looking for potential hazard trees and, if any, determining a course of action. We then help identify plants in your landscape that are best and ones that are undesirable or may become problematic. Unwanted plants can be subordinated by  pruning back or removing them to help desirable plants flourish. It's exciting to find and nurture "volunteer" plants that have migrated to your property and now call it home!

We can provide options to increase your overall enjoyment by integrating native plants into your landscape. Planting native plants will increase the ecological diversity and naturally add seasonal beauty.

Tree Removal

Our professionally trained experts can help assess your tree removal needs. After careful inspection of your property's trees, removal may be necessary or desired. We take many factors into consideration before this recommendation is made. A few factors indicating reasons for tree removal include hazardous defects, encroachment on architectural improvements, and the disturbance by invasive species. In doing so we help property owners increase the safety and beauty of their landscape.

The loss of a tree can greatly change the character of a property. Without the canopy of a large shade tree, your cost for air conditioning can increase. The lack of beauty and comfort that a well-sited shade tree can provide may significantly lower your property value. Cox and Company has many sources for replacement trees. With heavy equipment on-site to handle tree removal, many clients take advantage of the efficiency we can bring to planting new trees at the same time while the equipment is on site.

Forestry

Cox and Company has specialized equipment to help with your vegetation management needs. Our forestry mower efficiently reclaims overgrown fields, helps control invasive plants, and can prepare large areas for planting.

Our work produces large course woody debris. Keeping as much of this material on site as makes sense helps in several ways. Woodchips are an excellent soil amendment that can greatly help increase plant health and growth. Keeping large old tree trunks in the landscape to become "nurse' logs which provide habitat and can help moderate the effects of droughty periods as they retain a lot of moisture that can help plants young and old.  In naturalized areas leaving old tree trunks 15- 20' high provides important habitat for many species including birds.  Recycling and incorporating woody debris into the landscape is great not only ecologically, but can provide significant cost savings.

Large trees may yield logs suitable for lumber. We make every effort to utilize this resource to help bring economy to our client’s projects. Of particular interest are black walnut, cherry, white oak, and black locust logs. Along with our network of end-users for different tree species, we can process your trees into custom-sized lumber for you. We recycle all the woody debris from our projects.

Large Tree Preservation

Large trees near buildings, walkways, playgrounds, roads, etc should be regularly evaluated at least once a year by a trained expert. With more than 40 years of experience working on many large trees, including several of the Penn Charter trees located in south-eastern Pennsylvania, the experts at Cox and Company have the knowledge and experience to make well-reasoned recommendations. Our fleet of modern specialized equipment help us safely and efficiently care for your trees.

Large tree maintenance needs include removal of dead and hazardous branches, cabling and bracing vulnerable sections, insect and disease control, and fertilization. Adequate root growth and development can be challenging for large trees in our urban/suburban environment. Assessing this critical part of every tree is important for health and safety reasons. Cultural improvements and fertilization can be very helpful to maintain a tree’s overall health.

Pruning

Fast growing trees and shrubs often need directional pruning due to encroachment on buildings, driveways, and neighboring plants. Tree limbs can be weakened by decay and the stress from heavy storms. Carefully pruning compromised limbs can greatly help maintain the structural integrity and longevity of the affected tree. Removal of dead limbs is always important to maintain safety and plant health.

All Terrain Lift

Our rubber tracked lifts with working heights up to 90' are an extremely helpful part of our fleet. This equipment helps us to safely work in areas with difficult access.

Plant Health Care

You might be surprised who is eating your plants! Our clients benefit from our working relationship with several plant laboratories. Plant tissue and soil test results provide useful information in determining courses of action. Improvements to drainage and soil conditions can often increase plant health. Keeping plants growing vigorously will help them tolerate more abuse without needing to intervene with any unnecessary chemicals.

Initially, Cox and Company's trained staff will help select and install appropriate healthy plants for your specific site preventing many problems. Exciting recent developments in plant treatments allow us additional ways to maintain your plant’s health in environmentally friendly ways.

Lyme disease and West Nile virus are significant concerns for many property owners. The insects spreading these diseases are deer ticks and mosquitoes which we can control organically. Eliminating certain invasive plants and standing water can also make significant reductions in eliminating these problematic pests.

Root Flair Excavation

Heavy soils, site restrictions, excessive mulching, and poor nursery production techniques can all contribute to the development of chronic girdling root conditions for trees. Girdling roots can greatly suppress tree health and lead to high rates of mortality. Proper cultivation and early intervention are the best methods for prevention. With high air pressure and volume, we can carefully excavate and remove problematic roots.

Emergency Services

When storms strike our 24-hour emergency teams are on call and ready to respond quickly. Removing trees from damaged structures is very important to help minimize further damage. Blocked driveways and roads can cause great inconvenience but if emergency vehicles and utility company crews are blocked problems can worsen rapidly.

Repairing damaged trees and shrubs in a timely fashion can help minimize damage and help preserve important elements of your landscape.
